About Carisbrooke Castle Museum
The oldest museum on the Isle of Wight and housed within the former Governor’s House at the Castle, Carisbrooke Castle Museum was founded as a museum of Isle of Wight history in 1898 by Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. The origins of the castle date back over a thousand years and it, most famously, served as ‘secure lodgings’ for Charles I during the English Civil War.
